Mass Effect Andromeda is an action role-playing video game developed by BioWare Montreal and published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Microsoft Windows The game was released worldwide in March 2017. It is the fourth entry overall in the Mass Effect series and the first since 2012’s Mass Effect 3 The game begins within the Milky Way Galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is planning to populate new home worlds in the Andromeda Galaxy as part of a strategy called the Andromeda Initiative. The player assumes the role of either Scott or Sara Ryder, an inexperienced military recruit who joins the Initiative and wakes up in Andromeda following a 600-year journey.
When I first heard about this I was worried, because you cannot have Mass Effect without Shephard. But after playing the game, Ryder is a great character. Ryder isn’t a Shephard copy, Ryder is a different character. This game can be played without playing the original trilogy, so new players don’t have to worry about being confused, they are introduced to the Mass Effect lore. The references are great, I found loads and was happy past games were acknowledged. Its slightly difficult not bring able to compare to past games, but this feels like a Mass Effect game. Story was decent, combat is great, the Nomad drives well and the exploration is ok.
In the final calculation, ME:A still captures that Bioware magic in a major way. You’re humanity’s first pioneer in a new galaxy where every step is a discovery. You’ve got your own ship, your own crew, a big pile of guns, thousands of lines of dialogue, a mysterious cosmic force to investigate and hordes of hostile aliens to shoot. What’s not to love? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have planets to colonise.
That sounds like a difficult balance to strike, but BioWare’s plan should work. Apparently, in the single campaign for Andromeda the player will have the ability to send teams of people across the map to complete side missions – perhaps like securing bases or perimeters. If the player would rather do these missions themselves, they can do so in multiplayer mode where they’ll be part of the mission team.
